This assessment requires you to reflect on the subject content covered throughout PHE2CHP and your involvement in the group project. You are required to respond to two critical reflection prompts.

The first reflection will require you to consider the topics covered during PHE2CHP and respond to the reflection prompts provided below. The second critical reflection requires you to reflect on your learnings through your involvement in your group project. You are required to apply the Gibbs Reflective Practice Model to this reflection.

These reflections are to be presented in an essay format.

Critical Reflection 1

This semester we have covered the following topics.

  • Health Promotion Frameworks
  • Project Management
  • Networks and Partnerships
  • Evaluation
  • Community building and development
  • Social marketing
  • Consumer participation
  • Settings for Health Promotion
  • Health Policy and Advocacy

Task: Select one of the above topics and consider how your understanding of your chosen topic can be applied to the role of health promotion in communities. Consider a vulnerable or disadvantaged group in your reflection. Refer to the prompts provided in the Suggested Essay Structure for this task.

Critical Reflection 2

This semester you have been involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a small group health promotion project.

Task: Using the Gibbs model of reflective practice, reflect on what you have learnt from your involvement in planning, implementing and evaluating your group project. Refer to Appendix 1 below for details on the Gibbs Model of Reflective Practice.

Suggested Structure of Essay

Appendix 1: The Process of Reflection (based on Gibbs 1980)

Describe 

Write a clear description of the event or experience that has been the prompt for your reflection. Ensure your description is clear and easy to understand and there is a logical sequencing of events. You should include a description of your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours and not just a description of external events.

Questions to prompt reflection:

  • Describe the experience
  • What essential factor/s contributed to the experience?
  • What is the significant background factor/s to this experience?
  • What is the key focus for reflection?

Reflect

Identify your assumptions, values, beliefs, emotions and motives that play a part in the experience you are reflecting on. Explain how they influence your attitudes and your approach/behaviours towards the encounter. Explain their influence on the decisions you made and the things you did. This is one of the most important parts of reflecting. If you do not explore these things in your essay, you are not reflecting.

Questions to prompt reflection:

  • What was I trying to achieve?
  • Why did I act the way I did?
  • What were the consequences of my actions?
  • How did I feel about this experience, as it was unfolding?
  • How did others respond or feel?
  • How do I know how they responded/felt?
  • How might those values, beliefs impact on your future health promotion practice?
  • How did this event/experience help you understand the relevance of health promotion to paramedicine?

Research and Analyse

Once you have completed an exploration of your beliefs, values, emotions it is important to consider how others might approach the situation/experience. This is where you refer to the literature. Your discussion should include evidence of your personal/professional development as you respond to the object of your reflection.

Questions to prompt analysis:

  • How have my ideas evolved or changed?
  • Would you approach the situation/experience in the same way?
  • Do you have the same beliefs now?
  • Have your attitudes and beliefs changed? If not, how will this affect what you do next time?

Decide, Act and Evaluate (conclusion)

This is the final “learning” stage and is the opportunity to bring together the previous sections of your reflection to draw some conclusions. You should think about your future learning and behaviour and your future role as a health professional. This is an essential part of your professional development and is a skill that you will continue to develop throughout your career. It is fine to be speculative in this section, particularly when thinking about your role as a health professional.

Questions to prompt reflection:

  • How will the event/experience impact on your future role as a learner?
  • How it will affect your future role as a health
  • How would you approach a similar experience in the future and justify your answer? How do you feel about the experience/event?
  • What I have learned from the experience of reflection?
  • Have I made enough sense of this experience?
  • Do I need to continue examining this?
  • How can I use what I have learnt in the future?
