In this assessment item, you are required to design and deliver an oral presentation around a relevant topic of your choice but within the constraints of the Business Process Management (BPM) domain. In the presentation, you are required to demonstrate an understanding of the chosen topic (with critical context) and most importantly demonstrate your presentation skills.

Assessment Format

The presentation will be delivered as a group consisting of the same members that would have been already decided for Assessment 3.  The presentation will be of a 20-minute duration, including time for facilitating discussion and answering audience questions towards the end.  There is no limit to the number of slides. However, you are required to stick to the 20-minute timeframe. A suggested structure for the presentation is outlined below:

  • Title slide
  • Presentation outline slide
  • Introduction slide
  • Background slide
  • Main slides
  • Conclusion slide
  • Recommendations slide
  • References slide
  • Discussion questions’ slide

You are free to choose any topic related to the Business Process Management domain and base your presentation around it.  Hence, it is important that you read widely in the area and understand the topic before designing the presentation slides.

Example topics could include:

  • Challenges of Business Process Management in the 21st century
  • Phases of the Business Process Management cycle
  • Emerging technologies in Business Process Management
  • Managing change in a Business Process Implementation project
  • Critical success factors in Business Process Management
  • Business Process Modelling Notations
  • Robotic Process Automation
  • Lean or Six Sigma

*Please note that these topics are suggestions only. You are free to choose a relevant topic of your group’s liking.

In the presentation, please refer to relevant scholarly literature that provides diverse viewpoints and look at the issue from a global perspective. It is also suggested to include relevant examples in the presentation. The examples may be of organisations that have adopted BPM practices, used relevant technologies to improve their processes or even the hurdles they may have faced in the BPM journey.

By week 3, you need to seek approval of the topic from your Tutor (for on-campus students) or Unit Coordinator (for distance students). Duplication of topics will not be allowed i.e., only one group will be allowed to present a topic.

It is expected that each team member will contribute equally. The group should collate a list of the key points to be covered for the presentation and assign each member tasks that they need to accomplish, i.e. researching, developing slides and presenting. The presentation slides can be made using PowerPoint or other presentation tools such as Prezi.

On-campus students will deliver their presentations during the tutorial class, and the presentations will be marked in the class. Some informal feedback will be provided by the marker on the day of the presentation. However, marks will not be released immediately as they will need to be moderated by the Unit Coordinator first.

Off-campus online students will deliver their presentations online via Zoom video conferencing. The Unit Coordinator will set up a mutually convenient time for the presentation, in consultation with all the group members.

During the presentation, each group member should speak for approximately three to four minutes. The presentation can reflect the diverse viewpoints of the presenters. At the start of the presentation, one team member must introduce the presentation and the rest of the team.  You are free to decide how you want to sequence the speaking responsibilities. Towards the end of the presentation, it is vital that the last presenter summarises the presentation and leads the discussion session. For the discussion session, it is recommended that the team prepares two to three questions. These questions can be used to lead the class discussion. All team members should contribute to the discussion.

Marking Criteria

Students should familiarise themselves with the marking guide to ensure they have addressed the criteria when preparing and presenting their presentation. Your presentation will be assessed according to the degree to which you demonstrate your capability in the following areas:

  1. Visual Appeal
  2. Presenter Dynamics and Comprehension
  3. Presentation Skills
  4. Content and Coverage
  5. Presentation Structure/Organisation

The marks awarded for Criteria 1, 4 and 5 will be the same for all the group members. However, marks may vary for Criteria 2 and 3, based on how a presenter presents. If someone fails to participate in the presentation, 0 marks will be awarded. If there are unavoidable circumstances due to which the presentation is not delivered as scheduled, a medical certificate or similar evidence is required.

Your presentation must include in-text referencing and a correctly cited list of references ordered alphabetically by surname of the first author, in accordance with the Harvard style of referencing. The Harvard referencing style guide is available from your MYCQU portal.

Your presentation slides will be checked for plagiarism (material copied from other students and/or material copied from other sources) using Turnitin®. If you are found to have plagiarised material or if you have used someone else’s words without appropriate referencing, you will be penalised for plagiarism which could result in zero marks for the whole presentation. In some circumstances, a more severe penalty may be imposed as per the University’s policy.

Penalties will be applied to all members of the group. Hence, it is important that all members present on the allocated day/time and ensure that the presentation is free from plagiarism. All students in the group need to upload a copy of their presentation through the assessment submission link on the Moodle unit website by 11pm on the day of their presentation. Failure to do so may result in a mark of 0/20 for every member of the group.
