With this every changing environment, the way people do business and socialise with others, Social media has now become the new essential element for every individual. Every person who wants to connect with others and be heard by a large group or people is using social media. Despite of the fact that people are spread out in different parts of the world, social media is playing an important role to connect them. Many international students studying in Australia or other countries make use of various social media sites to stay connected with their loved ones. This clearly highlights the advantages of social media in a positive manner, however there are various negative effects that are associated with the use of Social media that one cannot ignore.
Over the years, there has been a rapid increase in the total number of social media users, from students, to housewives; to business owners are all using social media for their personal use. To meet this ever-increasing demand, many companies have come forward with different concepts targeting the specific market. For example, LinkedIn is only for professional to network, many recruiters use LinkedIn to not only recruit professionals but also to promote their events and products (Silvius, G. 2016). Similarly, Twitter is another social media site where one can find people from all backgrounds and niche. But out of these all social media sites, the most prominent one that has changed everything is FACEBOOK. Facebook is considered to be the biggest social media website, where people are not only sharing their videos and images but are also creating public events and are now selling their products and services. So social media have many use if they are used in a proper manner.
With this excessive use of social media, it has impact on our daily life, on average a person spend 1 – 5 hour on social media every day. Spending five hours on average on social media, is considered to be a waste of time, as the same time can be use more constructively (Hall 2010). Companies have realised that people spend more time on social media as compare to watching TV, as for this very reason many businesses are advertising and marketing their products on Social Media sites. The use of various marketing tools and tactics on social media are very common nowadays. This has clearly made a lot of difference on what an individual like to eat, where and events to attend.
As stated by Lin & Chen (2014), social media has become an important platform for individuals to share, interact and connect with like-minded people and there are over one billion users on daily basis. According to a recent research, it is been analyzed that social media sites are being used to build social capital and at the same time bridging the gap between official and personal relationships (Silvius, G. 2016).
