Assessment scenario
You are working at the Ellia Hotel (a subsidiary of Marino Enterprises) as the Head Chef. Every year, an international cooking competition, ‘Delicious and Nutritious’, is held. This year, your team has qualified for the first round! This is very exciting for your team and the hotel, as this is a prestigious competition that showcases the skills and talent of Chefs in the hotel industry.
This year, the competition is being held at the Sunshine Coast, QLD. As contestants in the competition (Chef’s), you will demonstrate your skills using a rich mixture of flavours, colours, textures, and aromas by preparing 3 courses (entrée, main and dessert) with a distinct character and to showcase Queensland meats, produce and seafood. Culinary competitions constitute a perfect vehicle to foster the evolution of the hotel industry’s cuisine offerings. They also represent a unique opportunity to learn from other countries and colleagues. More importantly, these competitions contribute to showcasing cuisine as a vehicle to promote the Hospitality and Culinary industry’s better understanding of domestic and international tourists and visitors. In addition to this, there is a cash prize of $100,000 for the winning team. You have received an email from the competition organisers below: |

Task 1 – Team plan
Congratulations on making it into the competition! The team who will be competing is as follows:
- Team Leader (you), Head Chef
- Team member 1 (Jane), Deputy Chef
- Team member 2 (Bobby), Junior Chef
- Team member 3 (Maria), Junior Chef
You have arranged a meeting with the team tomorrow (February 1st) to discuss the details of the competition and to develop a team action plan with short, medium, and long-term tasks to be completed to achieve the main goal – being the best of the best!
To be an effective team leader, your first step is to develop a team plan you can present to the team. This plan will be the rough outline of what needs to be achieved, how it will be achieved and when it needs to be achieved.
To ensure tasks are delegated effectively in line with the team’s current skills and to provide additional development opportunities, the team recently completed Belbin team role surveys to identify their preferred team role styles. Details of their roles are provided in the team plan template. You need to determine your own preferred team role style according to the Belbin model so you can integrate this into the team plan.
As such, access and review the following documents to inform your planning:
- SITXHRM009_Delicious and Nutritious Competition details
- BELBIN-questionnaire (complete the survey for you (personally) to inform how you play the role as Head Chef in this assessment).
Based on the competition details and your preferred team role, use the ‘SITXHRM009_AT2_T1_Team Plan Template’, develop a plan for the team to prepare for the upcoming competition. Once complete, save this document and name it SITXHRM009_[Your Name]_T1_ Team Plan V1 submission1 (if your first attempt, submission2 if your second etc.).
Task 2 – Team meeting
You must now meet with the team to discuss the outcomes of your planning and to get them excited and motivated about the competition.
During the meeting:
- discuss each section of the plan
- clearly communicate the team roles, responsibilities, and expectations
- as a team, decide on the dishes to be prepared for three (3) rounds of the competition – this will be your opportunity to encourage innovation. This will be documented in section 2 of the team plan.
Also, during this meeting, seek feedback from the team regarding the plan. The team will have suggestions and questions, and it is important that, as a leader, you encourage input and collaboration. It is critical all members of the team feel heard and understand their own roles and the overall team expectations. Changes made to the plan must align with organisational goals and policies.
You will be required to submit an updated copy of the team plan at the end of the role play: SITXHRM009_[Your Name]_T2_ Team Plan V2 submission1 (if your first attempt, submission2 if your second etc.).
Your assessor will observe your roleplay and will assess you using the observation checklist provided. Review the observation checklist before completing your role play to ensure you understand what your assessor will be looking for. Details of your roleplay are as follows:
Roleplay title | Team meeting |

· discuss the details of the competition, including the goal the team is aiming to achieve · clearly explain the delegated roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the team · seek feedback from the team and incorporate suggestions into the plan · collaborate with the team to decide on the menu for the three (3) rounds of competition. Throughout the meeting, you will need to use your leadership and influence skills to motivate the team, demonstrate support and commitment and ensure the meeting is productive and that everyone has input and feels valued. |
Participants | Student + a minimum of 3 classmates to play the roles of the team |

Prior to the role play | Re-read each section of your team plan to ensure it is fresh in your mind and refer to why you made certain decisions (i.e., how did the Belbin team role profiles inform your task allocation choices? Why are expectations for the team important? What is the goal of the competition?) |

Interaction objectives | During the meeting, you must achieve these outcomes:
1. Facilitate a productive meeting discussing each section of the team plan, which encourages innovative ways of working, and collaborate with the team to finalise the plan, clearly explaining the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the team with tasks delegated according to the Belbin team roles. 2. Use appropriate verbal communication to provide mentoring, coaching and support; ask open questions to seek and provide feedback on the menu development; to motivate and encourage the team while overcoming any communication or team dynamic barriers and/or barriers to delegation throughout the discussion. 3. Recognise the importance of audience, purpose and context when communicating with diverse team members, role model and use inclusive and collaborative techniques to encourage participation and contributions of all team members, allowing time to share their own knowledge, skills, and experience to achieve desired outcomes. 4. Task 3 –Update the organisation
Now the team plan is finalised, it is now time to inform the entire organisation of the team’s achievement of being accepted into the competition. Given this is a highly competitive prestigious competition, this is an excellent way to publicly recognise your team’s achievement and will allow everyone in the organisation an opportunity to congratulate the team and provide guidance and support.
Send an email to all staff explaining which includes:
- a statement recognising the teams’ achievement
- an overview of the competition details and the team’s goal

Task 4 – Monitor performance
It is now February 15th. To ensure competition deadlines are met, you emailed the team to follow up on their assigned tasks. Jane has sent you the following response:

Crème brûlée recipe card | ||
Hello!
I have just finished the first one – see attached. I have set aside time today and tomorrow to complete the others. Before I continue, I would like your feedback. Cheers Jane |
You must now monitor performance by reviewing the recipe card and provide mentoring and coaching through constructive feedback to Jane. Review the recipe card in the ‘student supporting resources folder’ and make a note of improvements. Write an email response that includes the following:
- a statement thanking Jane for sending the first recipe card through
- constructive feedback that outlines improvements but is still motivational
- additional support and coaching to help with improvements required, that encourages innovation
- a reminder of timeframes and expectations and your commitment to more effective communication
- other information you deem appropriate.

Task 5 – Competition day
It is the day of the competition, and the first round has been completed. The team seemed a little disappointed with how they went. During round, the following occurred:
- Jane went to season the protein, and the lid of the salt fell off
- Bobby was too focused on the time keeping they forgot to prepare the garnishes, which meant Jane had to rush at the end to get them sorted
- Maria accidentally spilled sanitiser on the floor during the clean up.
Overall, you think the team did a fantastic job, and they exceeded your expectations. The dishes were presented beautifully, the menu was innovative, and the crackle on the Crème brûlée was superb. Maria did a fantastic job hyping up the audience, the team ran exactly on time due to Bobby’s diligent timekeeping, and the judges seemed impressed with the complexity of the menu. This is a high-pressure event, so some mistakes are to be expected.
The results of the day are still being tallied, and an announcement will be made soon. While you and the team wait, you want to have a discussion with them about how the team performed and provide them with some encouragement, mentoring, coaching and support.
Your assessor will observe your roleplay and will assess you using the observation checklist on the next page. Review the observation checklist before completing your role play to ensure you understand what your assessor will be looking for. Details of your roleplay are as follows:
Roleplay title | Mentor and coach the team |
Scenario | You will be having a quick discussion with the team to recap what happened in the first round. You must:
· discuss the team’s performance, outline what went really well and allow the team to discuss areas of deficiency · provide mentoring and coaching, to help the team overcome concerns and to feel motivated and supported to move onto the next round. Throughout the meeting, use your leadership and influence skills to ensure the meeting is productive and to ensure everyone has input and feels valued. |
Participants | Student + a minimum of 3 classmates to play the roles of the team |
Date/time/location | Trainer/assessor to advise |
Roleplay length | Approximately 10 minutes |

Task 6 – Recognise and reward the team, update the organisation
The results have just come in. Unfortunately, the team placed 4th out of the 10 teams who competed. A copy of the judges’ comments has been provided in the ‘student supporting resources’ folder: SITXHRM009_[Your Name]_T6_Competition scorecard
The top 3 teams now compete in round 2, and then the final 2 teams battle it out at the finals. While the team are disappointed, they are pleased to have made it so close to round 2 and now have experiences they can learn from. You must now recognise and reward the team for their efforts.
Step 1 – Prepare certificates and email them to the team (reward)
Using the ‘SITXHRM009_AT2_T6_Certificate Template’, create a certificate of achievement for each of your team members. The certificates will allow you to reward and recognise the effort, contribution, and achievement of your team, even if the main goal was not achieved.
Each certificate must include the team member’s name and provide tailored feedback that relates to their performance. Once complete, save this document and name it SITXHRM009_[Your Name]_T6_ Team certificates submission1 (if your first attempt, submission2 if your second etc.). Note: these certificates are considered ‘sent’ once you upload this file.
Step 2 – Communicate outcomes to the wider team (recognition)
In addition to the certificates, you would like to recognise and reward your team at an organisational level. To do this, send an email to all staff explaining which includes:
- a statement recognising the team’s achievement
- an overview of how each team member contributed
- a statement thanking the team for their efforts and the organisation for the support
- other information you deem appropriate.
