Organizational Structure
Case Study 1
Question 1:
The organizational structure is important for a company to function successfully, it can be described as “organizational structure is the framework of the relations on jobs, systems, operating process, people and groups making efforts to achieve the goals. Organizational structure is a set of methods dividing the task to determined duties and coordinates them” (Minterzberg, 1972 as cited in Ahmady, Mehrpour & Nikooravesh, 2016, p. 456). The organizational structure of Coles after the Second World War was based on the Multidivisional structure. This type of structure is divided into distinct and smaller sections executing multiple activities. Every division is more attentive so the different sections are more focused, receptive and can easily adapt to market alteration rather than other organizational structures. There are many types of multidivisional structure, the customer-centric is given more attention in major companies (Lee, Kozlenkova & Palmatier, 2014). The structure used by Coles in my opinion is the customer centric multidivisional structure after the Second World War. The reason why this structure has been identified is due to the fact that they emphasized on creating an environment of the store in which the customers are comfortable. The company focused more on other functions rather than only emphasizing on food retailing. Moreover, the main essence of the multidivisional business organizational structure is that it divides the business into separate and minute divisions that focus only on the division’s roles and responsibilities. This would help the company to accomplish what they are trying to achieve that is expansion and making the customer happy. Through this approach, Coles has expanded all over the country from a small store in 1914 and now it is among the top chain of supermarkets in the country. The items in the company ranges from food to electronic products, not only this the company is also recognized worldwide not for its retail services but also for other services like Coles Financial Services, Coles Express and many others (Coles Group, n.d.). However, this has been done in recently but it can be seen that Coles has successfully expanded its services and have multiple divisions under one company to accommodate the customers.

Question 2:
Coles after the advent of the internet and modern technology adapted the change in the society. It utilized the technology to expand itself and was recognized a global brand in the world. The organizational structure implemented by the company was a divisional organizational structure, to be more specific Coles applied product based organizational structure (Elsaid, Okasha & Abdelghaly, 2013). This type of structure emphasizes on making distinct divisions with in a company handling different products. For example, the company introduced Coles Express, Coles Financial Services, and Flybuys to provide other services to the country and expand itself into something bigger and better. Every division of the company handles its own product, has its own sales, marketing and other important roles to sell the division’s product. The Coles Group has expanded its company through the use of technology and innovation in the country like through online shopping the company attracted multiple customers which helped the company to recognize it as a global brand. Moreover, the product organizational structure is focused around the product or the service that the company is providing to its customer (Lee et al., 2014). Similarly, the company provides an array of different products and services to the customer in the form of different companies under one big name that is the Coles Group. As the case study mentions about FlyBuy that engaged about 3.5 million clients towards it, this shows that the people were hired for this division to attract more individuals and reach the target audience of the company. This was all possible through the adaptation to the advanced technology by Coles, this also motivate the brand to try something new to provide the customer with a good experience along with expansion all over the country in other fields.

Question 1:
Many companies have started involving their lower level employees in their business functions, the companies are empowering their employees through involvement in different business strategies. Ongori (2009) in his paper argued about the involvement of employees through empowerment, it has been recorded that empowerment through job involvement creates a sense of self confidence among the employees and they feel that they are given attention in the company. Moreover, they feel they have some worth in the company. They are motivated through various incentives. Obiekwe, Zeb-Obipi & Ejo-Orusa (2019) states multiple benefit of involving the lower level employees in the business strategies, these employees are dedicated towards completing a task and the trustworthiness of the superiors in them make them quite successful in fulfilling the requirements of a task. Moreover, it has been seen that the employees who showcases a great deal of involvement in the business pushes other employees also to complete the given task within the specific time duration. Furthermore, these types of employees also take upon themselves to apply the particular decision which the company takes with the help of these employees. On the other hand, there can be quite a few limitations for the company to involve the employees in the business strategies, these challenges can be the egoistic attitude of the superiors towards their employees. The superiors think that through the subordinates’ involvement in the business can make their position critical in the company and they might lose their stance in the firm. In Addition to the challenges, many of the managers think that their employees are lazy and are not capable of completing any task correctly. Furthermore, the superiors also think that if they involve the subordinates in the business strategies than the employees could expose their managers regarding their deeds and attitude towards them in the company (Obiekwe et al., 2019). It is important for the organization to involve the employees in the decision making along with business strategies of the company so that they evolve the sense of self confidence and enhances their self-esteem in the company.
