 Introduction

The concept of 3D design and modelling is relative renew where is it involves the utilisation of the most sophisticated printing Technology. never the less, this particular concept is gaining a global acceptance and its reputation as a cost effective and a highly impactful method of design and modelling is gaining momentum. In this chapter of the study under consideration, the contemporary research literature in the same subject matter has been reviewed. The chapter starts off the discussion with an overview of the contrasting definitions of the concept of modelling and design, followed by the potential of prototyping across the world as it has been highlighted in the research literature review. Next, the specific case of the manufacturing industry has been considered and the current practices of 3D design and modelling in the manufacturing industry have been outlined. In addition to this, the microeconomic as well as the macroeconomic of influence of the adoption of these practices has been critically reviewed, followed by an overview of the major challenges which lie in the way of successful adoption of the 3D modelling and design practices in the manufacturing industry. The chapter also presents some empirical evidence from the contemporary research literature. This empirical evidence pertains to the successful case studies regarding the adoption of the 3D design and modelling practices. Finally, a theoretical framework has been presented comprising the notable theories which underpin the subject of this research.

2.2 The Concept of 3D Design and Modelling

3D modelling and design is actually the process of the creation of a 3D representation of any object or surface through the manipulation of edges, polygons and vertices in a 3D space that is simulated. The results of 3D design and modelling are available in the form of animations, movies and video games which comprise imaginative structures and creatures. 3D modelling and designing is done by manually using software related to the same. This software allows a 3D designer to deform and create surfaces of a polygonal nature, or simply scan objects in the real world in order to use the scanned data points to represent digital objects (Loh et al., 2018)

The utilisation of 3D design and modelling has gained so much acceptance such that contemporarily, this kind of technical expertise is being employed in an Eclectic range of fields including architecture, entertainment, engineering, special effects, development of games and advertising for commercial purposes. One popular example of the usage of the 3D design and modelling technology is that of its application in major motion pictures. For instance, the famous movie Avatar directed by James Cameron in the year 2009 was one of the first movies which transformed the 3D design and modelling industry due to the reason that it made effective use of the concepts of 3D modelling in order to create the Pandora planet in which the storyline of the movie is set.
