Assessment task link to unit learning outcomes:
- Understand teaching of the elements of numeracy and literacy across all curriculum
areas including the creative arts
- Use understandings of cross-cultural knowledge of mathematical and literacy
development for designing effective pedagogies and programs for literacy and
numeracy learning
- Build the capacity to lead literacy and numeracy learning and support children in their
efforts to expand standards of literacy and numeracy
- Apply effective literacy and/or numeracy practices in a context of relevance.
Details of task:
This assignment is designed to enhance your professional learning as you are
required to select an area of interest that you wish to investigate further. Please
negotiate the topic selected with your lecturer.
If you chose a literacy focus for AT1, you must choose a numeracy focus for AT2, and and
visa versa.
If you achieved a PASS OR CREDIT for assignment 1, then you MUST choose from one of the
following topics:
Areas to select from are:
- The role of language in young children’s literacy or numeracy learning;
- Teaching reading in the early years;
- Teaching writing in the early years;
- Teaching measurement in the early years.
- Teaching statistics and data in the early years.
If you achieved a DISTINCTION OR HIGH DISTINCTION for assignment 1, then you may
choose from one of the topics above OR one of the topics below:
- Integrating literacy and / or numeracy across the curriculum (e.g., Science;
Humanities: Physical Education) (please be conscious that the main focus here needs
to be literacy or numeracy);
- Connecting home and school literacy and / or numeracy experiences;
- Literacy and diversity in the early years; à this is my topic
- The role of multiliteracies experiences in supporting young
learners’ literacy and numeracy development;
- The role of e-learning experiences in supporting young
learners’ literacy and numeracy development;
- Theoretical approaches to literacy or numeracy teaching;
- The role of culture in young children’s literacy or numeracy learning.
Written paper:
- Provide a rationale for the area selected, noting why this topic is important to
children’s early literacy and/or numeracy learning.
- Examine key issues or debates in the area selected for investigation.
- Demonstrate how you would lead literacy and/or numeracy learning for children,
with specific reference to the topic identified.
Presentation requirements: The assignment should be written as an essay and must
conform to APA 7th edition writing and referencing style.
Criteria for Marking:
- You have provided a rationale for the topic selected for investigation.
- You have identified the key issues or debates in the focus area.
- You have described how you would lead literacy and/or numeracy learning for
children in this area.
- Your paper draws on substantive and authoritative sources to support your contentions.
- Your writing demonstrates a well-expressed, clearly proof-read and coherent development of ideas.
- You have used correct citation conventions and accurately recorded the bibliographic details of texts cited in your paper.
