Assessment Overview
You will be required to complete tutorial activities in modules 3, 5, 7 and 9 relevant to the material covered each week. A tutorial discussion is a collaborative learning approach where participants analyse and discuss a real-world scenario or problem. It encourages active engagement, critical thinking, and the application of theoretical concepts to practical situations.
Discussion tutorials will be conducted in groups and will be marked by the tutor in class.
Assessment Details
Tutorials will be based on case studies from the prescribed text. The lecturer will allocate the case studies on a fortnightly basis.
Find below a sample structure of a discussion tutorial, you may want to use some or all of the suggestions:
Introduction to the Case Study: The tutorial begins with the introduction of a case study, which is a detailed description of a specific situation or problem. The facilitator provides background information, context, and relevant details about the case study.
Reading and Analysis: Participants are given time to read and analyse the case study individually. They review the information provided, identify key issues, and consider possible solutions or approaches.
Group Discussion: The tutorial moves into a group discussion phase, where participants come together to share their insights, perspectives, and analyses of the case study. The facilitator may guide the discussion by asking probing questions, encouraging participants to explore different angles and consider various viewpoints.
Application of Theory: Participants are encouraged to apply relevant theories, concepts, or frameworks to the case study. They discuss how the theoretical knowledge can be used to understand the situation, analyse problems, and propose solutions.
Debate and Dialogue: A tutorial discussion based on a case study often involves healthy debate and dialogue among participants. They may have different interpretations or approaches to the case study, and the discussion allows for the exploration of diverse viewpoints and the examination of potential pros and cons.
Decision-Making and Recommendations: As the discussion progresses, participants work towards making decisions or recommendations based on their analysis of the case study. They consider the potential outcomes, risks, and ethical implications of different choices.
Reflection and Feedback: Towards the end of the tutorial, there may be a reflection phase where participants reflect on the key learnings, insights gained, and challenges faced during the case study discussion. The facilitator may also provide feedback, summarise important points, or highlight areas for further exploration.
Wrap-Up and Conclusion: The tutorial concludes by summarising the main takeaways from the case study discussion. The facilitator may emphasise the practical application of theoretical knowledge and encourage participants to continue developing their analytical and problem-solving skills.
Case study-based tutorial discussions are highly interactive and promote collaborative learning. They enable participants to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and decision-making skills by applying theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.
