Purpose of the task

The purpose of this task is to critically analyse the effects of psychotropic medications on body processes across the lifespan, examine the clinical implications, develop comprehensive knowledge about the use and adverse effects of these medications, and apply this knowledge by planning appropriate health teaching strategies. In critical evaluation of an individual psychotropic medication class you will apply scientific judgement, and contemporary evidence from a range of sources to underpin the use of pharmacological therapies, management of medication regimes, and frameworks which inform mental health nursing care. This task will also expand your understanding of the range of psychotherapeutic interventions that support recovery in different situations and contexts of care, and will assist you in developing the skills required to assess an individual’s response to the administration of psychotropic medications.

Task description

Choose one of the following clinical scenarios, then answer the question that follows. This task should be written in an essay format with full sentences, paragraphs, and references.

Clinical scenario 3

Mrs Rachel A. is a 73-year-old retired hairdresser with a past history of bipolar disorder and osteoarthritis. Because of her history, Rachel is required to take Panadol Osteo (paracetamol), Lithicarb (lithium), Epilim (valproate), and Kalma (alprazolam). Rachel presents to her psychiatrist for a routine six-month review and complains about worsening of her hand tremor, tiredness, and weight gain.

Discuss three (3) physical health implications of using lithium, sodium valproate, and alprazolam in older people with a focus on Rachel. Once you have discussed physical health implications, analyse Rachel’s presenting signs and symptoms in relation to the medications she is on, and discuss the results of your analysis with Rachel.
