Introduction

There are ten sources that may cast an impact on working and learning (Noe & Winkler, 2012). Of these ten forces, globalization tends to  be the most important. Globalization deals with global expansion, and is driven by technology. It may be rightly stated that technological developments and advancements have triggered globalization, creating jobs for people across the world and influencing the workplace environment.

Introduction to Globalization

Since globalization has creeped into the world economy, every business must brace up to deal with the latest inventions. It is particularly through technology that global expansion has been turned into a reality. Globalization is not restricted to any one product market, economy, or company size. It is possible for companies to purchase goods that have not been produced locally, and employ people belonging to various cultural backgrounds. In fact, globalization has made the domestic firms compete with overseas companies. Entrance into the international markets has been made possible through exportation, and outsourcing facilities in other countries. In addition to that, globalization has also enabled the companies to ally with the foreign companies and engage in e-commerce. Since globalization has allowed the companies to outsource their operations and also form alliances with foreign companies, the demand for talented employees with global intelligence has reached its acme. However, there is a dearth of talented employees as the demand seems to exceed the supply. Companies tend to assign duties to the managers for supervising the operations overseas. However, these managers tend to lack the understanding of one’s culture indispensable for attracting, motivating and retaining the pool of talented personnel.

As a consequence, companies now tend to take the necessary actions to tackle these problems. First and foremost, the companies are training the managers, as well as their families for the purpose of undertaking assignments overseas. Besides, the companies are also ensuring that the global employees get quality training and they do not miss out on developmental opportunities. It is particularly through globalization that cross-cultural training has now become the norm. Cross-cultural training enables the employees, alongside their families to understand the cultural aspects of the countries they are being relocated to. The training process involves an overview of the norms of the foreign countries, as well as a thorough understanding of the foreign culture. The training provides the employees and their families with sufficient assistance in their stay in the foreign country and their safe and easy return to the home country. Globalization also facilitates immigration. It is through immigration that workers from overseas come to the home country. Hence, these workers are to be trained too so that they may understand the culture of the country to which they have been relocated. It must always be remembered that globalization does not result in job losses.
