P..1. The committed work force of any business organization is the main strength of the entire business operations. Particularly in manufacturing setups, it is the performance and work commitment that leads the organization towards its goals. Every individual worker possess his own religious beliefs and traditional values, while the same may contradict with other’s and may cause a conflict disturbing the internal environment and the work in progress.
The same situation aroused between the two senior workers at the quality check department. It started with a casual chat discussing either’s religion and changed into a hot discussion. This disrupted the whole work in process as more co-workers accompanied them. Being the head of department it was a challenging situation for me. I had to perform as an arbitrator and should persuade other co-workers to continue with their work. My immediate response was to analyze the severity of the situation, then changing my stance in a very friendly mood I persuaded the fellow workers that they should not aggravate the conflict and go back to their positions. Then I convinced both the parties that besides different religious beliefs they both are co-workers and friends since many years. This step eased the situation.
Such a situation is not rare in the present business setups, it is the competency of the managers how well they establish a working environment to avoid such conflicts and how well they are prepared to act in such scenarios. Going through the principals of management a manager in a leading position, individuals prior to starting with their task have to self assess their personal abilities. As stated by Griffin & Fleet (2014) that a good manager relies heavily on his or her conceptual, communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills to decide among multiple courses of action that look equally attractive.
P..2. The situation like conflicts among the employees can be avoided using different techniques depending upon the competency of the manager. The relation among the manager and the employees should not be the one of a leader and subordinates but it has to be the one of a co-worker. A manager has to adopt a behavior that develops a feeling of trust and loyalty among the employees. He should be aware of their personal issues and feelings. A good manager should be perceptive enough to figure out where the problems are between people and smart enough to figure out how to fix them (Fina, 2009).
The working environment should not be stressful for the employees irrespective of nature of the job. Building a strong bonding among the co-workers will not only be more productive in the performance of the task, but also will be barrier for any conflict like situation. Creating a fun activity during the working hours will be a support in developing an affable relation among the co-workers.
Dealing with the issues of conflict among the employees a manager should act liberal. Analyze the situation, should be able to realize the feelings of the participants of the conflict and then take action that is acceptable for the conflict parties without creating any adverse affect on the working environment.
P..3. Being in the role of a manager, I must be aware of my personal nature. Facing such conflict issue, my first response will be to evaluate the nature of the conflict, either it can be ignored or not also the main cause of the conflict. The conflict aroused due to the difference in opinion about each other’s religious beliefs. If it is left unattended, it may develop into something more serious affecting the whole work environment. I’ll very calmly listen to each individual’s version and agreeing on their individual viewpoints will develop a sense of trust on me. It is important that both the employees should be comfortable in revealing the actual facts.
My next step will be to change their feelings about each other; will persuade them about the consequences of the conflict on their individual jobs and also on the part of organization. To resolve the conflict it is important that both of them should not talk about their personal beliefs in future. The solution of the issue have to be acceptable by either of them, it wouldn’t be right if one has to apologize to the other, as it may hurt the feelings of the other. Also it might develop a sense of personal favoritism on one part. Moreover once the conflict is resolved, I will maintain a close link with the employees by regularly communicating with them.
P..4. Dealing with this situation I have learned that if I have to manage a group of employees, first of all I should be well aware of mu personal competencies, my behavior, my attitudes and emotional feelings. I should overcome my weak points. While working in a leading position I have to build an effective communication bridge with the employees, and should be well informed about personal problems and beliefs. In case if any employee is disturbed due to his own personal issue a state of cognitive dissonance might occur, affecting the productivity of the employee.
Further to enhance my managerial skills I would develop my competencies on how to communicate effectively with the employees and how to gain their trust. Committed employees are an asset for the organization, I should have the ability to create an environment in which employees feel comfortable and enjoy their job. I should learn to mold my personality that will make me a role model for my employees.
