Unilever Future Leaders Programme (Human Resources)

Unilever Future Leaders Programme has been designed to recruit management trainees for the multinational organization. This programme is global in scale and takes place in Australia too. The aim of this programme is to hunt for and select the best available talent. After that has been done, the programme aims to groom the selected candidates into leaders of tomorrow.

In this report, the focus is particularly on the selection and recruitment of Future Leaders in the function of Human Resources. The selected candidates can expect to get valuable corporate exposure. They will get to experience four to five rotations in roles across their choice of business function. Not only this, the selected candidates will also go for an enthralling six month international rotation within South East Asia. This rotation will be fully funded and supported by Unilever. Moreover, the chosen candidates can expect a fun and comfortable work environment where they will be continuously mentored by the seniors in the organization. Hence, it can be classified as the dream job of every fresh graduate.

Since Unilever is a multinational corporation which has its operation spread across seven continents, it strongly believes in adding value to the personal as well as professional lives of all its employees (Khalid & Tariq, 2015). Its mission is the same in Australia too. Therefore, the selected Future Leaders will get a hands-on corporate exposure which will allow them to not only grow professionally but to also flourish as an individual.

Recruitment Strategy

The recruitment strategy has been designed using Breaugh’s model of the recruitment process. The process starts off with recruitment planning. The whole recruitment process is first brainstormed and designed before it is rolled out for execution to the human resource team of Unilever. The hiring for Unilever Future Leaders Programme will be done externally. Since the main target audience for this programme consists of fresh university graduates who have done at least their undergraduate, contacts will be required in all the leading universities of Australia. Even though Unilever provides everyone equal chance of employment, the main focus would be on the leading universities because that is where the top-notch talent of the country lies.

As already mentioned, Unilever is looking for fresh university graduates to join their Future Leaders Programme. University students who are in their last semester of study are eligible to apply. There is no mandatory requirement of job experience. However, it is preferable that the applicants have some sort of internship experience. It will add value to their job application. Nevertheless, applicants who do not have any internship experience can apply too. In order to fill in the vacancy of Future Leader for Human Resources function, the organization is looking for a person who has high emotional intelligence, good social skills, outgoing personality, is adaptable by nature, can work under pressure, is eager to learn, has leadership skills, and can work well in a diversified team of people. Since the selected candidate will be required to contribute to almost all of the Human Resources tasks such as hiring and recruiting, training and development, handling compensation, looking after employee benefits as well as the legal framework that the department is supposed to comply with, having these key skills is absolutely essential. Only a candidate who has if not all at least most of these characteristics is fit for the role of future leader of Human Resources in Unilever.

Selection Process

Step 1

Once the recruitment strategy has been drafted and finalized, the recruitment process will officially kick start. According to Stevens and Szmerekovsky (2010), “A recruitment source that is frequently utilized to attract prospective employees is the employment advertisement.” The carefully formulated recruitment advertisement (Refer to Appendix A) for Unilever’s Future Leaders Programme will be published on Unilever’s official website, LinkedIn, and the job portals of various universities. This will happen in the beginning of January. The advertisement posters will also be posted on the notice board of universities. As can be seen, the advertisement is quite specific and has all the relevant details. Advertisements play a pivotal role in the recruitment process because they help the organization in attracting a large pool of applicants. Resultantly, it has an important part to play in helping the organization recruit the best possible talent.
