MMH232 Assessment Task 1 – Training Report

Scenario

Your team (4 of you) have been hired by the owners of Easton Ivy, a contemporary bar and restaurant in the heart of Melbourne. After a successful few years, the owners are seeking to expand Easton Ivy and open another bar and restaurant in Victoria. This is where your team comes in! The owners are seeking to ensure there is standard instructions/procedures across the restaurants and will need to train several new staff members. Therefore, they require your HRD expertise to develop a 45 minute training program. Your team needs to select one of the following topics (see below) and develop a training program. The training program is to be developed as a report, which will be considered by the owners for future implementation. Your team is to assume that if the owners are happy with your report, your team (4 of you) would be running the training program, meaning your training program should be designed to be run by 4 trainers but it still needs to contain enough information so that if another person was to run your training program they could with no issues.

Training Topics (please select ONE)

  • Food handling
  • Making a coffee (using a coffee machine)
  • Making a special drink (such as cocktail)
  • Origami napkin for table setting
  • Origami paper flowers for table decoration
  • Setting the table
  • Closing a table (once customers have finished their meal)
  • Other – please email steen@deakin.edu.au to get approval on a different topic idea that is within the context of the scenario

As part of the assignment task, you will need to develop instructional steps (approx. 7-9 steps) that are designed to breakdown your training topic (please keep that in mind when selecting a topic). Please pretend that the owners of Easton Ivy are paying you for this work. Therefore, you MUST not copy any resources, images, videos or instructional steps etc. from the internet/current or past workplaces. All work contained in your report MUST be your own.

Team Formation and Registration

Each team requires 4 team members. To assist with finding team members, a team formation discussion forum has been created. Once you have your team of 4, please enroll your team by going to TOOLS, then GROUPS and select an available group number. Please do not enroll in a team unless you have permission from the team to do so. All students not in a team by the end of Week 3 will be allocated together in teams of 4.

Training Program Information

In developing the training program for Easton Ivy please note the following:

  • The training program must plan to TEACH 10 employees to do something (see topic list on page 1). It must break tasks down and plan to take employees through them step by
  • For the purposes of the assignment, you are to assume that the training would be conducted face to face (pre-covid) and that the new employees have NO prior knowledge of your
  • The training program must plan to have the trainees actively involved as opposed to just sitting and watching.
  • The training program must plan to assess every employee individually and be built into the 45 training session
  • The training program must allow time for the employees to practice the task in its entirety before the assessment phase takes
  • The training program must be designed to go for 45 MINUTES. This include the introduction, training (taking employees step by step through the task), giving employees time to practice, individually assessing each employee and then allowing time for an evaluation phase to

Throughout the trimester additional information will be provided in the classes (lectures), seminars and via CloudDeakin.

Training Report Contents

The aim of the training report is to provide a written training package that contains all the details on each element of your training program for the owners of Easton Ivy. Therefore, it should be detailed enough so that any person could deliver the training. The report should be 4,000 words (see the green comments below as to what is not included in the word count). The report on your training program must contain the following and be submitted as ONE MS word document (no appendices):

  1. Title page (team members names, student ID numbers, team number and team topic) (not included in the word count)
  1. Table of Contents (not included in the word count)

3.      Aim and Learning Objective

  1. A detailed list of ALL the items and quantities required for your training program (for example facilities, equipment, resources, materials)

5.      Training Strategy

  1. Develop an instructional handout for trainees that includes steps that are designed to breakdown your training topic in your training program (must be your own and not copied from the internet)
  2. Develop a PowerPoint presentation for your training program (can be included as print screen images) that could be used to guide the trainers and trainees through the training program
  3. Explain and justify your delivery method for your training program
  4. Include an annotated room layout plan suitable for your training program for 10 trainees

6.      Assessment Strategy

  1. Identify and describe the three categories of assessment
  2. Explain how the three categories of assessment can be implemented in your training program
  3. Develop an audience analysis form and explain why it is an important part of developing a training program
  4. Develop assessment criteria (and an assessment criteria form) and explain how it relates to your learning outcome
  • This section (6. Assessment Strategy) must be supported by at least 4 references such as the textbook and academic journal

7.      Evaluation Strategy

  1. Identify and describe the four levels of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model
  2. Explain how you could use the four levels of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model to evaluate your training program (where applicable)
  3. Develop an evaluation form for your training program
  • This section (7. Evaluation Strategy) must be supported by at least 4 references such as the textbook and academic journal

8.        Session Plan

  1. Develop a session plan for your training program. The session plan must meet the minimum requirements as expected in a session plan (see examples as outlined in the class and seminars).

9.      Team Reflection (500 words)

  1. Include a 500 word reflection on how you have interacted as a team to complete the Prompt questions to consider reflecting on include:
    • What worked well in your team?
    • What did not work well?
    • How could you improve the teamwork?
    • What have you learned about working in a team?

  1. Reference List (Deakin Harvard Referencing) (not included in the word count)
  1. Teamwork Journals (4 journal entries required) (not included in the word count)

In order to be effective in working as a team to develop the training program, it is necessary for the team to work together on bringing together the many elements of the assessment. As such, the teamwork journal will evidence the journey and the contribution of each of the team members. The journal forms part of the overall training report and will be marked as part of this. After moderation of team member participation, and in the event that a team member has not participated effectively, the individual member’s total mark for the assessment can be adjusted down to reflect their participation. The journal should be structured according to a template (see below) and there is an expectation that you will ‘meet’ for a minimum of 4 times, resulting in a ‘minimum’ of 4 journal entries. As a group you will need to create an entry for each meeting, there is no maximum number.
