A 1,200 word written report that utilises readings and field experiences to describe issues observed within the thematic context of the unit. To be submitted via LMS. The submission should be about 1,200 words in length and can include some visual materials (sparingly). The journal should not simply be a sequential account of the site visits, but rather consider how these can be considered within one of the following themes:
1. Movement and the Lived City – How do the flows of people and information and the form of the city affect the lived experience of city life? What can be drawn from this in urbanised and suburban environments? How does the changing city form and functional location alter community identity at the human and city-wide scale? What difference do the street artists, graffitists, parkours, urbexers, tourist gazers, homeless make to the lived city? Who else matter in the CBD and how and why? (e.g., Corporations, small businesses, residents, tourists, universities?)
2. Space, Place and the Layered City – How does the physical presence of diverse communities with diverse purpose in the city act to create different ‘places’ within one city? How is the changing social understanding of the use of space and the role of the public realm evident throughout Melbourne? Who are the key place makers in the city and the suburbs – are they different?
3. Community and Competing Representations – What is the nature of community identity and identities of communities in the city and the suburbs? How is this constructed at the personal, group and policy level? Does the physical form (e.g., density, layout) of the city/suburbs play a role in determining identity?
