Assessment task description:
- This is the second (2nd) unit of assessment task student has to complete to be deemed competent in this unit of competency.
- The task consists of case study, meeting and practical activities.
- The student must respond to all tasks and submit them to the Trainer/Assessor.
- The student must answers to the required level, e.g. provide the number of points, to be deemed satisfactory in this task.
- Trainer/Assessor is required to provide the feedback within two weeks and notify students when results are available.
Applicable conditions:
- This task is untimed and are conducted as open book tests (this means the student can refer to textbooks during the test) except the presentation which must be conducted within 10 to 15 minuts.
- The student must read and respond to all activities.
- A student must use computers to answer the activities.
- The student must complete the task independently.
- No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.
- Trainer /Assessor must assess student’s written skills and knowledge as he/she complete this assessment task.
- The trainer/assessor may ask the student relevant questions on this assessment task to ensure that this is his/her work.
Resubmissions and reattempts:
- Where a student’s answers are deemed not satisfactory after the first attempt, a resubmission attempt will be allowed.
- A student may speak to their Trainer/Assessor if student have any difficulty in completing this task and require reasonable adjustments (e.g. can be given as an oral assessment)

- This assessment task may be completed in a learning management system (i.e. Moodle), workplace, or independent learning environment.
- Trainer/Assessor will provide the student with further information regarding the location for completing this assessment task.

Purpose of the assessment
The purpose of this assessment task is to assess the students ability to establish and maintain a work health and safety system, conduct research and consult with stakeholders
Instructions for answering written questions:
- It is expected of students to correctly complete all the activities.
- Answers must demonstrate an understanding and application of relevant concepts, critical thinking, and good writing skills.
- The student must concise to the point and write answers according to the given word-limit to each question and do not provide irrelevant information.
- The student must not use non-discriminatory language. The language used should not devalue, demean, or exclude individuals or groups on the basis of attributes such as gender, disability, culture, race, religion, sexual preference or age. Gender inclusive language should be used.
- The assessor should not accept answers copied directly from texts without acknowledgement of the text.
How the trainer/assessor will assess the work?
- This assessment task requires the student to answer all the questions.
- Answers must demonstrate the student’s understanding and knowledge of the unit.
- If all assessment tasks are deemed Satisfactory (S), then the unit outcome is Competent (C).
- If at least one of the assessment task is deemed Not Satisfactory (NS), then the unit outcome is Not Yet Competent (NYC).
- Once all assessment tasks allocated to this Unit of Competency have been undertaken, the trainer/assessor will complete an Assessment plan to record the unit outcome. The outcome will be either Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).

- You are expected to respond to all aspects of each question and case study. In some cases, direction is provided on the expected length of your response. These assessments will require a Short, Medium or Long
- The following is a guide to the expected number of words for each of these categories unless otherwise indicated.
Instructions to students
This task will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to establish and maintain a framework for health, safety and security, maintain consultative arrangements for the management of health, safety and security and evaluate organisational health and safety system in the workplace. Your assessor will break the class into groups to develop a WHS management plan.
Using the information in the case study and your own experiences within the hospitality sector to assist you work with your class and assessor to complete the following activities.
(If you are a Travel and Tourism student, you can use either Case Study 1 or Case Study 2 attached as Template 6 and base all the questions on this template).
Case Study
Roger has established “Why Cook Pty Ltd” a catering company in the last 5 months and the business is growing. Roger now employs 2 full time workers, a cook and an office administrator, as well as casual staff and contractors as required.
Roger is very keen to ensure that Why Cook is successful and decided to do things the right way from the beginning. He has already developed some basic policies but now he is working on his WHS policy and Management System. You are friends with Roger and have been a manager at a local restaurant for 2 years. Roger has asked you to assist him establish and implement a complete WHS system as you already have worked with a WHS consultant to implement a WHSMS within your own business. You meet with Roger, and his staff (your class mates and assessor to role-play this scenario) and discuss the types of activities and planning, that needs to be followed to successfully develop and implement a suitable WHS policy and WHS management system for Why Cook. |
- Prior to meeting Roger, you must access and interpret key legislative documents to ensure that the WHS system you are going to develop complies with regulatory requirements, standards and codes. List the documents you access and given an explanation of each and how it will comply with the WHS management system. (LONG)
- You must now meet with Roger (your assessor) to discuss the WHS policy and WHS management system and complete the following:
- Prepare an Meeting Agenda for Why Cook? and in the agenda, insert a topic you would need to discuss if you were to hold a first meeting about developing a WHS policy and WHS management system. You can use the template below.
- With your assessor hold a meeting and discuss the types of activities and planning that you, Roger and his employees must follow to successfully develop and implement a suitable WHS policy and WHS management system for Why Cook? Document meeting minutes in the template below.
- Use the Meeting Minutes template you developed and write down all comments from your discussion.

- Develop an Action Plan that Roger, his staff and yourself will be required to follow which lists:
- Developmental Objectives
- Implementation Goals
- List of responsible individual people (list the job titles)
- Timelines on how you and Roger should lead the development of the WHS Policy and WSH management system and implement it into Why Cook? TL.
- You are now required to design a WHS management system to suit the characteristics and needs of the business “Why Cook?”
- Prior to designing the WHS Management System, consult with WHS specialist and obtain any feedback to assist you with the design process.
- Design a draft WHS management system You can refer to the following website for guidance:

- Once you have designed your WHS management plan, meet with your assessor to obtain his feedback. When all the students have completed their draft plan your assessor will divide you into groups and your colleagues will act as the other staff members with whom you must discuss your draft plan. Makes notes of your meeting.
- You are now required to complete the draft WHS policy Roger had already started ensuring it covers all the necessary aspects of Roger’s catering business. Ensure the policy includes the following and is readily accessible to all personel.
- Name of the policy
- Scope
- Objectives of the policy
- Purpose
- Commitment is clearly outline
- Who signs off the policy
- date and review date
Refer to Template 1 as an example which can assist you in designing your WHS policy. Once you have designed it ensure you email it to your assessor for feedback.
- Roger has drafted a job description for his cook, you will need to define and allocate health, safety and security responsibilities within relevant job descriptions.
- Consult with Roger and his staff and develop an a plan for WHS training requirements. Include budgets, target date, etc. You can use the template below or develop your own. (MEDIUM
- You must now develop a record keeping policy and procedure and template for WHS Records.
- Develop records management policy and procedure. You must maintain a consistent format for all policies and procedures and in easy to read format. (LONG)
- Develop a template for keeping record of all WHS records. (LONG)
- Consultation process is now important for all staff at Why Cook.
- Explain how you might consult with the workers at Why Cook about implementing the new WHS and Security management system. (SHORT)
- Develop a flyer about safety which you have been asked to send to all staff to demonstrate that you are implementing a WHS management system. (MEDIUM)
- Develop an action plan that Roger and his staff can use to implement the system. This could be in a table format with dates and responsible people nominated. You can choose to use Template 2 or Template 3 if you wish as a guide or develop your own.

- Develop a written proposal, which you need to submit to Roger, which will address the training of employees about WHS law and legislation, WHS policy and WHS management system.
Include the cost of implementing the system (days of training etc) and also the cost saving benefits of reducing injury and down time for staff. (LONG)
- Discuss with your assessor the benefits of providing appropriate coaching and mentoring support to employees to ensure that they achieve the identified training needs to ensure that they understand the WHS policy and WHS management system.
- Presentation (10 to 15 minutes)
Once all the students have completed their consultation with the assessor and competed the design of their WHS management system they must present to the rest of the group the design of their WHS management system, the benefits, importance of consultation, training and records management. Students must obtain feedback after their presentation. Prior to presenting students must prepare their PowerPoint presentation and obtain feedback from their assessor.
