Background

There are three assessments for this unit. All three assessments revolve around the development of a single project. The three assessments, therefore, are staged developments of the project solution.

  • Assessment 1 - Concept proposal for the project
  • Assessment 2 - Final proposal for the project
  • Assessment 3 - Detailed development of one aspect of the final proposal

There is therefore a linear progression between the assessments, meaning that the quality of subsequent submissions will be influenced by earlier submissions. In other words, doing well in the concept stage will make it easier to do well in the final proposal stage, which will also make it easier to do well in the detailed development stage.

So, making an early start and putting effort into the submissions from the very first week is highly recommended.

Project brief

The project is to design and build an orphanage in the outskirts of Jinghong City, Yunnan, P.

  1. China.

The constraints are these:

1 - THE DESIGN

  • The orphanage should be conceived of as a community, with buildings to house the orphans, the carers, administration, visitors, school activities, medical facilities, dining, hygiene, etc.
  • The orphanage should house 100 orphans, aged 0 to 12, say uniformly distributed.
  • The orphanage should be designed to accommodate expansion to 2,000 orphans, over time.
  • It may be assumed that:
    • One carer is required for every 5 children 0 to 2 years of age
    • One carer for every 10 children 2 to 5 years of age
    • One carer for every 15 children 5 to 12 years of age
  • Apart from carers, administration, support, catering, medical and maintenance staff need to be

  • It is a requirement of the project brief that the buildings be constructed principally from

The constraints are limited. Limiting the constraints gives you an opportunity to develop the project as you see fit. However, you will need to argue the case for the choices you make and defend them.

Submission

The requirements are detailed in the unit guide. Submission must be through the Deakin Cloud designated drop box. Note that penalties for late submission will be strictly enforced, as a matter of Deakin policy. The matter is out of the hands of the unit teachers. Please do not send messages apologizing for late submissions for whatever reason. This will not avoid penalties.

Assignment 1

  • Group work (4 people) 25%

  • Video and report due Thursday, 3pm, 24th November, 2016
  • Comments submitted to two teams, and then into drop box within seven days (1/11/2016)

You are required to form groups of four people, and to register your group on the Deakin Cloud. You are advised to have a least one person with an architectural background, and one with a construction background. (Off-campus students are advised to join a group with on- campus students.)

You are then required to make a submission in response to the project brief, addressing the briefing constraints, but also supplementing your proposal with augmenting research that develops the brief more fully.

There are four aspects to the proposal that you need to address; each about two A4 pages maximum. These should be clear in concept, even if details and specifics are missing. These are:

  • DESIGN: How will your proposal supply the needs of the orphanage?
  • CONSTRUCTION: How will your proposal be built? What will it need?
  • BUDGET: What will your proposal cost, and how will you keep the costs down?
  • MODULARITY: How will you standardize the components of your buildings so as to make them versatile and adaptable to different uses and settings, even in different locations?

Your concept proposal should be submitted as a video as well as in a report. While the report will be written, with drawings and chart to supplement, as necessary, the video is an opportunity to express your thoughts orally. You are welcome to make the video as a team, or (especially in the case where there are off-campus students) you can produce individual segments and splice them into a whole. If you have concerns about how to make a video, please contact the Deakin IT support desk, or just look it up on YouTube.

We will review your videos in class and discuss you work in Session 2. Remember, your video will be critiqued by your colleagues. (For grading purposes, the video and report will have equal weighting.)

The fifth requirement is that you critically comment (constructively) on the work of two other groups with regards to these four criteria. (You can use the marking rubric as a guide.) You should provide one A4 page of comments for each group. You need to submit this both to the relevant groups and to the designated assessment drop box by 1/11/2016.

  • 5%: Comments on submissions of two other teams
  • Video and report due Thursday, 3pm, 5th January, 2016
  • Comments submitted to two teams, and then into drop box within seven days (12/1/2017)

In this assessment you are to remain in your groups and you are to continue work on your proposal, refining it to completion. You need only focus on three aspects (each of about 3 A4 pages), though you are welcome to capture as much detail as is necessary to make your proposal clear and convincing. They are:

  • DESIGN: Show your completed proposal, and justify
  • CONSTRUCTION: Explain how you will build the
  • BUDGET: Tell us exactly what the project will cost, and how you reached that

In your submission you also need to designate a section in your report and video that responds to your colleagues criticisms, explaining how you have addressed these. This may also be up to 3 pages long.

Your final proposal should be submitted as a video as well, of up to 8 minutes long, expressing what you have said in the report.

Once again, we will review your videos in class and discuss you work in Session 3. Remember, your video will be critiqued by your colleagues. (For grading purposes, the video and report will have equal weighting.)

You also need to do again as you did for Assignment 1, and critically comments on the work of two other groups. (These needn't be the same groups, but can be.) You should provide one to two A4 pages of comments for each group. You need to submit this both to the relevant groups and to the designated assessment drop box by 12/1/2016.

Assignment 3

  • Individual work (1 person)
  • 50%
  • Video and report (Same content, weighted equally)
  • Due Thursday, 3pm, 26th January, 2016

Here you work individually. At least you are assessed individually. There are five streams to the project, each with three subsections:

  • DESIGN: Fidelity of design brief, alignment of orphan care philosophy with design, and architectural aesthetics
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Scheduling, quantity surveying, and risk management
  • FINANCIALS & BUDGETING: Total projects cost, bills of quantities costs, and value management strategy
  • CONSTRUCTION DETAILING: Fabrication process, materials specifications, and design & section details (drawings)
  • INTERNATIONALIZATION: International marketing plan, company SWOT analysis & competitive advantage, and competitive strategy

You are required to take up ONE only of these five streams, and develop it fully and in great detail.

Each member of the team should take up a different stream. (If there are four members in a team, then one of these streams will not be reported on.)

At this point your individual report may take up to 20 A4 pages, supplemented by a 5 minute individual video.

You will be assessed on the refinement you bring to your designated section, which will be worth 30% of your final grade. However, you will also be assessed on how well you respond to the critique you were given by your peers, worth 10%, and also on how well your refined proposal remains consistent and integrated with the work of the team members who contributed to the development of the proposal.
