TOUR7022 Exploring The Impact of Dark Tourism on Awareness, Health and Psychology of Tourists

·         You may choose to use the tutorial issue of ecotourism as the basis for your report.

·         OR, you may choose to use a different issue e.g. Dark tourism, Host-Guest Relationship, Events & Technology.

Note: the issue must relate to tourism, hospitality and/or events.

·         This combined approach therefore requires two (or more) disciplines.

Note: if there are more than two disciplines, then two of these disciplines must be those included in this course, and the focus of your report must be on those disciplines.

For Example: A research paper may use a combined approach that incorporates psychology, geography, and marketing. The article can be used, so long as the focus of your report is on the combination of psychology and geography.

·         There are different ways that disciplines can be ‘combined’, including:

o   Disciplines overlap in their focus, E.g. culture, heritage, environment;

o   Disciplines work together to combine their approaches, E.g. Economic Geography;

o   Disciplines can adopt theories from other disciplines, E.g. Education can use motivation theories from psychology; and

o   Disciplines can adopt methods from other disciplines, E.g. Ethnography, Participant Observation.

Tip: Take time to find the journal article as this will actually save you time. Using the right type of article will make the rest of the assessment task much easier. Use the questions in Step 3 as a guide to whether the article has right characteristics for this task.

·         The journal article is an appendix for your report, but you don’t need to actually copy it into your report as you will upload it into the blog instead.

·         The journal article CANNOT be Walter (2020) or Breakey and Breakey (2015) as these papers are used in the course to assist your understanding of this task.

·         What is the ‘research problem’ being investigated in this article?

Note: this will be more specific than the issue.

For example, within the issue of ecotourism, a research problem could be ‘why are ecotourists visiting the Great Sandy National Park causing so much environmental damage?’

·         How is the research undertaken?

Questions to consider:

o   What ‘bodies of knowledge’ are included in the Introduction and the Literature Review sections?

o   What method or methods are used?

o   Is the research qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method?

·         Consider which way the two disciplines are ‘combined’ (see Step 2 for examples).

·         What does Discipline One contribute?

Questions to consider:

o   What is specific to this discipline?

o   How does it contribute to the research? E.g. Knowledge? Theory? Approach? Method?

o   What does it bring to the research that no other discipline could contribute?

·         Similarly, what does Discipline Two contribute?

·         How does using this ‘combined disciplinary approach’ create real-world outcomes?

Questions to consider:

o   What are the practical / managerial implications identified in the research? Note: Various words can be used to present the ‘implications’, such as contributions, recommendations, and findings.

Note: For this task you are not considering the academic / theoretical contributions.

o   How have the two disciplines contributed to each implication?

For example: Discipline One may be the basis for two recommendations, Discipline Two the basis for one recommendation, and the combined disciplines for the fourth recommendation. Alternatively, there may be only two real-world outcomes and both are due to the ‘combined approach’.

·         Use the answers to the questions provided in the previous step (Step 3) to guide the content for the ‘body’ sections of the report.

Tip: use the Marking Rubric to ensure you address each aspect of the criteria in your report, and note the weightings for each criterion.
